Understanding Anger

We are all aware of anger, the uncontrollable urge when we’re experiencing mixed emotions through fleeting annoyance, sadness, disappointments, or guilt; these feelings can contribute to something acceptable, but when it gets out of hand this can raise red flags that might need an immediate attention from a professional.

 

Anger, as defined by the American Psychological Association is an emotion characterized by antagonism toward someone or something you feel has deliberately done you wrong. Anger can be a good thing. It can give you a way to express negative feelings, but excessive anger can cause problems. Increased blood pressure and other physical changes associated with anger make it difficult to think straight and harm your physical and mental health.

Why are there people experiencing anger disorder more often than usual?

 

In the Philippines, anger issues are quite common to elder lies who are experiencing rapid changes with their aging process, chronic pains, and things such as memory loss and experiences that come with getting older. However, anger issues can also arise from younger people and grown-ups. Hence, the main reason why anger issues are being accumulated is with how a person was raised by his parents or guardians; if a child encounters a lot of hitting, shouting, throwing and abusing he might think that it is the right and normal way of expressing anger. People who are experiencing anger most often are those who have low tolerance for frustration. However, it can be frustrating to a person who deals with anger issues to cope with people who perceive it negatively.

 

What can be done? What are the things we need to consider?

If you are that type of person who gets easily irritated or frustrated, try with something simple like deep breathing and relaxing imagery

  1. Go for a walk. Getting away from a situation that is causing you to feel angry can help you calm down and think things through. …

  2. Control your first impulse.

  3. Dance

  4. Do a deep breathing exercise.

  5. Count backwards from fifty.

  6. Meditate

  7. Visualize a peaceful scene.

  8. Listen to some relaxing music.
